Janis Smith Founding Pastor
Janis Smith has devoted her life to ministering God’s love to the broken and hurting. She went into full-time ministry at the age of 17, when she and her husband, Gary, began traveling the United States as singing evangelists. Their group, “The Soulsearchers,” brought a revolutionary new sound to Christian music.
After settling in Central Florida in the 1980s to raise their young family, Janis and Gary started City of Life Church in Kissimmee, Florida. What began as a home Bible study with just thirty members has blossomed into a multi-thousand-member church family. Amid the high demands that accompany serving in full-time ministry, Janis found the time to earn her doctorate from Barry University and to become a nationally-certified psychologist with five areas of specialty. She also serves as the president of Heritage University and Seminary, a nationally accredited institution of higher education.
Janis Smith is a prolific songwriter and a gifted singer with five recordings to her credit, including “Hymns of the Heart” and “Visitation.” You can often find Janis leading worship at City of Life, pouring her heart out before God and leading people deep into His life-altering presence.
Devoted to increasing the quality of life for those who are less fortunate, Janis is the president of Hands to the World, a missions organization based in La Ceiba, Honduras, that feeds millions of meals to hungry children around the world.
