If you are a believer, the Bible describes your identity with statement after statement written in the present tense, not the future tense. You aren't working toward these realities; you inherit them the moment you are born again:
- You are complete: "And in Him you have been made complete..." Colossians 2:10
- You are a new creation: "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." 2 Corinthians 5:17

None of these scriptures say you are "becoming." They declare what you are, right now.
You’re Not Becoming Something. You Already Are.

Because if you think your standing with God depends on your performance this week, you will always feel behind. The cross was not a down payment or a payment plan. It was paid in full. God didn't open a spiritual account and start depositing a little bit more each week depending on how good you've been. He deposited the entire, finished work of Calvary into your account the moment you were saved.
If you are exhausted from trying to earn God's approval, here is the good news: stop trying and start living. Serve Him, worship Him, and get your heart right toward Him, knowing you are already pleasing to Him in Christ.
What the Feeding of the 5,000 Teaches Us About Identity
We see this principle illustrated clearly in John chapter 6 during the feeding of the 5,000.
Faced with a massive crowd of over 15,000 men, women, and children, the disciples calculated the cost and saw only scarcity. But a boy offered five barley loaves and two fish. Notice what Jesus did next: He didn't just multiply the food and hand it out Himself. He broke the bread, placed it into the disciples' hands, and had them distribute it.
When Jesus placed that food into their hands, He was showing them who they were. You are not just someone God feeds. You are someone God uses to feed others. You are a distributor of His grace.
Relationship vs. Fellowship: Why It Doesn't Always Feel True
If all of these promises are already true, why don't they always feel true in daily life? Because there is a vital difference between relationship and fellowship.
- Relationship happens the moment you are born again. Your name is written in the Book of Life, and you become a child of God. That status is settled and secure.
- Fellowship is what happens when you actually spend time with Him day by day.
Think of it like riding in the truck with your dad as a kid. Sitting in the passenger seat, listening to his stories, and riding along with him doesn't make you his child. You already were. But spending that time together is what makes you know him, sound like him, and carry yourself like him.
Relationship gives you the name. Fellowship gives you the experience.
Faith Is Your Withdrawal Slip
Knowing your spiritual account is full and knowing how to access it are two different things. Faith is how you access what God has already provided.
Faith is the inward conviction that God has already acted, even before you can see it. Believing is putting that conviction into motion through speaking it, acting on it, and standing on it.
- Begging assumes God might say "no" to something He already secured at the cross.
- Believing steps out in confidence on what God has already declared true.
As Hebrews 11:6 reminds us, without faith it is impossible to please God. You don't beg for what is already yours in Christ; you receive it by faith.
God Has Already Gone Ahead of You
You can trust that your spiritual account is secure because God is already in your future.
Deuteronomy 31:8 promises that the Lord goes before you. John 16:13 explains that the Holy Spirit guides us into all truth. A guide is someone who has already been where you are going. He has already scouted your week, stepped into the hard conversations you are dreading, and marked the path forward.
God isn't scrambling to catch up with your daily life. He is already in your tomorrow before you arrive there.
How to Start Walking in Your Identity Today
- Shift from begging to believing: Instead of praying, "God, if You see fit, please love/accept me," start praying, "Thank You, Lord, that I am already accepted and forgiven in Christ."
- Anchor your mind on Scripture: Pick one identity verse from the list above (like Colossians 2:10 or 2 Corinthians 5:17) and speak it out loud daily.
- Prioritize daily fellowship: Carve out time to simply sit in God's presence—whether in prayer, worship, or reading Scripture.
