If you feel stuck right now, I want you to know something: you are not stuck because you did something wrong. You’re in a waiting season. And waiting seasons often feel like standing still, even when God is actively working behind the scenes.

I get it.

• Maybe you're waiting on a relationship to heal or begin.
• Maybe you're waiting for a business to take off or a career door to open.
• Maybe you're praying through a health challenge or waiting for direction on a big decision.
• Maybe God gave you a dream years ago, and you're still watching the door stay shut.

When you're stuck in the in-between, what does the Bible actually say about how to navigate it? How do you move from feeling helpless to living with purpose while you wait?

1. Don't Let Anyone Look Down on You Because You're "New"

When we're waiting for God to open a new door, we often feel unqualified or sidelined. In 1 Timothy 4:12, the Apostle Paul writes to Timothy:

"Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity."

Most people treat this purely as a youth group verse. But in the original Greek, the word translated as "young" (neotēs) also carries a primary meaning: new.

Don't let anyone look down on you because you're new.

Think about how that lands differently:

• Maybe you aren't young, but you're new to faith.
• Maybe you're new to a city or starting over after a hard season.
• Maybe you're new to a calling or a role you didn't ask for.

Timothy wasn't just young; he was stepping into leadership alongside seasoned apostles who had walked directly with Jesus. Imagine the pressure! Yet Paul didn't tell Timothy to wait until he felt ready. He told him to set an example now, right in the middle of his newness.

Only Jesus can make you new. You cannot manufacture spiritual growth on your own. But once He does that work in you, you have a responsibility to let it show—even while you're waiting for the full promise to unfold.

2. If You're Waiting, Do What Waiters Do: Serve

So what do you actually do in a waiting season? Here is the secret: if you're waiting, do what waiters do—and serve.

You cannot control when the door opens. You cannot control when the resources show up or when the right person enters your life. But you can always control how you serve in your current season. Nothing can stop you from serving someone today.

Look at how this pattern repeats throughout Scripture:

• David was waiting to become king, but he learned leadership while serving as a humble shepherd.
• Joseph was waiting for the realization of his dreams, but he learned wisdom and integrity while serving in a prison.
• Joshua was waiting to lead Israel into the Promised Land, but he prepared by serving alongside Moses.
• The Disciples were waiting for God’s kingdom to manifest, and Jesus handed them towels, bread, and fish, telling them to serve others first.

Serving isn't what we do to pass the time; serving is how God prepares us for what’s next.

3. Serving Isn't About What It Produces

We don't serve to manipulate God into opening doors faster. We serve because He is worthy of our obedience.

In Mark 10:45, Jesus said that even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve. If anyone in history had the right to demand service, it was Jesus. Yet He washed feet, touched the outcast, fed the hungry, and carried a cross that wasn't His.

• If you feel too busy to serve: Gently examine your schedule.
• If you feel too stressed to serve: Focus on peace, but don't let stress sit you on the sidelines.
• If you're a business owner or leader thinking it's costly: Remember that Jesus didn't run the numbers before giving His life for us.

The Impact of Everyday Obedience

I don't say this from a distance. I grew up attending City of Life Christian Academy from age four through twelfth grade, and my own son goes there today. That is the fruit of people who chose to serve me when I was not easy to serve!

I even met my wife, Amanda, when we were eight years old serving together on a children's ministry puppet team. I found my calling and my spouse while serving—not by waiting passively for life to happen. You never know what eternal impact is attached to your simple act of obedience today.

Your Next Steps: Stop Waiting for the Perfect Moment

You don't have to have everything figured out to take your next step. You just have to stop waiting for the perfect moment and start stepping into community right where you are. That is how world changers are built. Not overnight, but by people who decide to serve while they wait.
