There is a version of the Christian life where you show up, you sing, you go home, and nothing supernatural ever touches your Tuesday. A lot of people are living it. Not because God withheld anything, but because nobody told them what they were handed.

This is part of our ongoing series on the Holy Spirit: understanding who He is, what He does in you as fruit, and how He flows through you as spiritual gifts.

Fruit Grows on a Tree. Gifts Sit Under One.

Fruit takes time. You plant, you water, you wait. That is Galatians 5, and that is why spiritual growth often feels slow because character develops over a lifetime.

But a spiritual gift is entirely different. It is like a Christmas tree: you walk up to it and there are gifts sitting underneath. You do not grow those; you open them. Fruit is character, but gifts are given and received. Same Spirit behind both, and only one is waiting on you to unwrap it.

Who Gets the Gifts of the Holy Spirit?

Paul answers that before he lists a single one in 1 Corinthians 12:7: "But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all."

Given to each one. Not just to the church staff. Not to people who went to Bible college. Not to whoever is holding a microphone on Sunday morning. Put your hand on your heart and realize that means you.

And notice the purpose: for the profit of all. These gifts were never designed to make you feel special in isolation. They were designed to move through you and land on someone else. We often talk about accepting Jesus as a personal Savior, but we accidentally turned personal into private. A private Savior never sends us across a room to pray for a stranger. He gave you gifts so other people could experience freedom.

The Nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Read 1 Corinthians 12 out loud and you will hear Paul repeating himself: diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit; differences of ministries, but the same Lord. He knew somebody would watch another believer operate in a gift they were uncomfortable with and decide it must not be God. Do not let that trip you up.

Paul lists the gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8–10: the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healing, the working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, different kinds of tongues, and the interpretation of tongues.

They become much easier to understand when grouped by their function into three distinct categories:

• The Discerning Gifts: The power to know.
• The Declarative Gifts: The power to say.
• The Dynamic Gifts: The power to do.

The Discerning Gifts: The Power to Know

Sometimes the Spirit gives you an insight you could not have deduced on your own.  

The word of knowledge is an insight that can only come from the Holy Spirit, much like Jesus revealing the past of the woman at the well in John 4.

I experienced this in my early twenties preaching a revival at a packed church in Baltimore. Down front praying for a hundred people, no microphone, laying hands and moving down the line, I came to a man I had never seen before. Something dropped in my spirit: tell him that if he lays down cigarettes, the thing he has never been able to put down, God is going to pour out a blessing he cannot imagine.

I did not smell smoke. Nothing about him suggested it. I just said it. He raised his voice in front of the whole room: "Liar. You are a false prophet." Their pastor was sitting right on the front row. I told him to move on if it didn't apply, finished praying, and went back to my hotel room to cry like a kid.

The next night, that same man walked out of the crowd and asked for the microphone. He was a key staff leader. He told the packed house that nobody had ever known he smoked, not even his wife of twenty years, and he had been so angry he yelled false prophet. He started crying, I hugged him, and the room came apart. That gift is on the list Paul says is given to each one.

Discerning of spirits is next. This is not your mind sizing someone up; it is your spirit perceiving the spiritual reality behind a moment, just like Paul recognizing the true spirit behind the girl following him in Acts 16. You need this gift when raising kids, navigating marriage, or evaluating rooms where things look agreeable on the surface but feel off underneath.

Word of wisdom rounds out this group. Knowledge reveals information, but wisdom tells you what to do with it when you are caught in a difficult conversation and need divine direction.

The Declarative Gifts: The Power to Say

This group exists to build people up, bring comfort, and communicate divine truth.

Prophecy in the New Testament is primarily a message of encouragement, strength, and exhortation from God through a person. It does not require a stage. It flows through preaching, personal conversations, or creative expressions. Paul calls this the one to want most (1 Corinthians 14:1), not out of arrogance, but out of obedience.

Different kinds of tongues serve multiple purposes. At Pentecost, it manifested as unlearned human languages so people from diverse nations heard the gospel in their native tongue (Acts 2). Paul also regulates public tongues in a church service and references a personal prayer language where the spirit prays even when the mind is unfruitful (1 Corinthians 14:14).

Interpretation of tongues is a separate, distinct gift that translates a public message in tongues so the entire gathering benefits.

The Dynamic Gifts: The Power to Do

Working of miracles represents divine intervention that supersedes natural laws. I come from a long line of Holy Ghost Pentecostals. My great-grandmother, Mama Flippo, once prayed over a family financial crisis and saw money provided in her hands, and another time lifted a fallen car off my grandfather when he was pinned with a crushed pelvis. A miracle is simply something a human cannot do on their own.

Gifts of healing are plural in the text. Some believers carry a specific faith to pray for the sick and see physical restoration through the power of God. 

Faith in this context is not the saving faith that brings someone to Christ, but a supernatural surge of confidence dropped into your spirit for a specific trial or battle. When bad news hits, everything in your spirit rises up and says, "That is not going to win."

There Is a Gift You Have Not Opened Yet

A couple of Christmases back, I loaded gifts from my mom's house into my trunk. My golf clubs were in there, and one package slid behind them and stayed hidden. I opened it two years later. It was a Cowboys key ring, sitting in the dark while I remained completely unaware it was mine.

Many of us are standing in hard seasons, asking why heaven feels quiet. Heaven isn't quiet. He is saying, "I already gave you the answer. Use the gift I put in your hands."

You do not get to pick and choose which parts of the Spirit's work you accept. He has given you access to all of it.
