The Sweetness of God
Pastor Jeffrey Smith
Prayer is about communion. It is about community. It's about learning what the presence of God feels like. When you are in communion with God in prayer, you get the sweetness of God on your attitude.
Can you imagine waking up, reading your Bible, spending a minute in prayer, and saying, “Father, I love you today. Bless you Lord. Help me use the right attitude today and just be with me. Holy Spirit, I don’t deserve it, but thank you for being with me in Jesus' name. Amen.” Can you imagine that same person then going out and screaming about who knocked over the cereal bowl? That’s not going to happen.
We all need the sweetness of God on our attitude and this comes from the presence of God. That’s what communion is all about. Prayer is talking to God, and reading the Word of God is having God talk to you.
What if someone says, “I want the greatest marriage in the history of marriages, but I don't want to talk to my wife and I don't want her to talk to me.” Isn't that ridiculous? It’s like a Christian saying, “God, I want you to answer everything that I wish, but I don't want to pray. I don't want to talk to you, and I don't want you talking to me. I don't want to read my Bible. Just do everything I want. Amen.” That's not going to work. It's not going to happen like that because real prayer is about communion.
When Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane, he prayed and told God he didn't want to do this, yet he continued, “…but nevertheless, it's not my will, but your will,” (Mark 14:36). Communion is about learning what God is like. In prayer, we’re learning from his presence, learning from his Spirit, and learning from his attitude. Then, its about getting his attitude into your attitude, changing your attitude, and bending your will to his will. The sweetness of God comes from this kind of communion.
