The Danger of Conditional Faith
We often approach God with a laundry list of conditions. "God, bless me, but do it this way." "Move in my life, but only in this area." "Send me good friendships, but don't take away any of my current ones." We even pray things like, "Transform my marriage, but do it through my spouse." Or my personal favorite: "Bless my finances, but do it through the lottery."
These prayers might look like faith on the surface, but they're not. True faith involves risk. In fact, I'd argue that faith is spelled R-I-S-K. It's about placing ourselves in complete reliance on God, vulnerable and open, with no other option but Him. He becomes our only chance, our only source.
No Other Gods: Understanding the First Commandment
This brings us to Exodus 20:3-6, where God commands, "You shall have no other gods before me." It's easy for us church kids to read this and think, "I've got this! I don't have any statues in my house that I worship." But we're missing the point if we think idolatry is just about physical objects.
In the Old Testament, people worshipped statues and figures. Today, our idols might look like titles, cars, or celebrities. Anything that causes us to devote care, worship, and attention meant for God has become an idol in our lives.
Worship is What You Place Worth On
Here's a profound truth: worship is what you place worth on. Where is your worth attached? Is it tied to the news cycle? Do you allow a TV to tell you whether you should fear the future or not? Who has the biggest voice in your life? Who has the final say?
Exodus says, "No other God before me." No other influence. No one but God gets the final say. And He declares Himself a jealous God. That might make us uncomfortable, but think about it this way: if someone tried to take my wife and son from me, I wouldn't be gentle about it. I'd fight with everything I have because they're mine. In the same way, God is jealous for us because we belong to Him.
The Modern Idol of Attention
In our digital age, one of the most significant idols we face is our attention. Companies and advertisers are fighting for our focus because they know that attention is where worth goes. Our attention has become our act of worship.
Think about it: how much attention do you give your spouse? Your children? If we made attention a currency, where are your investments? How much "net worth" does your marriage get? Your relationship with God?
Redefining Worship
Many of us think worship is just about singing and clapping in church. But true worship is about where we place our attention. It's about focusing on God and removing distractions. The music and corporate singing are powerful tools to help us do this, but they're not worship in themselves.
Creating Space for God
One of the biggest challenges we face is creating space for God in our lives. We're so full of other things - social media, Netflix, work - that we don't have room for Him. It's like going to a Mexican restaurant, filling up on chips, and then having no appetite for the main course.
Desire happens when there's emptiness, when there's space. If you were on a three-day fast and knew you'd get a burrito at the end, you'd be thinking about that burrito constantly. That's the kind of desire we need for God.
Tearing Down Idols
As we enter this new season at our church, I believe God is calling us to tear down the idols in our lives. Maybe it's time to delete social media from your phone. Maybe it's time to turn off the TV for a few weeks. Create space, and you'll find that hunger and desire for God start to grow.
God Wants Your Desire
God doesn't just want you - He wants your desire. He wants you to want Him. He's a jealous God who desires passionate love from His people. If you're going through the motions without heart, it's like telling someone "I love you" and getting a lukewarm "thanks" in response.
The Generational Impact of Passion
There's a sobering truth in Exodus 20: God says He'll punish the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Him. But He'll show love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands.
I once heard it said that the best way to develop an atheist is in a religious home with no devotion. When children see parents who say they love God but show no passion or devotion, it teaches them that God is just words, just a Sunday morning event on the schedule.
Imagine a world where kids saw the most passionate moments of God in their homes. Where they go to youth camp and think, "This is awesome, but mom and dad do this all the time. Our family worships like this." That's the kind of legacy we should be leaving.
A Call to Passionate Faith
As we wrap up, I want to challenge you: what in your life is dividing your attention from God? What needs to change? Let's stop coming to an unconditional God with conditions. Let's desire Him so much that we say, "God, I want you, no matter what it takes."
This is the kind of faith that moves mountains. This is the kind of devotion that impacts generations. Whether you're a high school student, a grandparent, or somewhere in between, there is no other God for you but the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The God who can satisfy your soul deeper than any material good, any relationship status, or anything social media could ever offer.
Pursuing a Higher Place of Worship
I believe this message is calling our church to a higher place in worship, holiness, and devotion. God is jealous for us, and He desires our hearts to be turned fully toward Him. So let's reflect on what the Holy Spirit has revealed to us today. Let's address those things that are dividing our attention. Let's pursue God with everything we have.
Remember, there is no other God worthy of our worship and praise. Let's live like we believe that truth. Let's be a church known for our passionate pursuit of God, impacting not just our generation, but a thousand generations to come.
Will you join me in this pursuit? Will you commit to removing idols and creating space for God in your life? The choice is yours, but I promise you, it's worth it. There truly is no other life worth living than the one fully surrendered to our jealous, loving God.
