We are in a series called "Give God One Year," where each month we focus on mastering a spiritual discipline. Last month, we talked about prayer, which is the discipline of speaking to God and bringing our hearts before Him in conversation.
This month, we are flipping the table. We want to talk about making room for God to speak to us. If prayer is you talking, Bible reading is God talking. If you've been doing all the talking without making room to listen, you've only heard half the conversation.
Here is why the Word of God matters, what it actually does in your life, and a practical way to start building a habit that changes everything.
1. God's Word Guides Your Steps
"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." — Psalm 119:105
Notice what the Psalmist says: the Bible is a lamp, not a spotlight.
We live in a culture that wants a spotlight. We want God to shine a light all the way down the road, showing us the full five-year plan. But God usually shows us just enough light for the next step. When you take that step in faith, He illuminates the next one.
If you are waiting for a spotlight before you make a move, you might be waiting forever. Reading the Bible daily is how you let God illuminate your path one step at a time.
2. God's Word Changes Your Perspective
"For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword..." — Hebrews 4:12
The Bible is not just a collection of ancient wisdom or a book of good ideas. It is alive. It doesn't just inform you; it transforms you.
When we read Scripture, God reveals things to us. He exposes wrong thinking, corrects bitter attitudes, and replaces anxious fear with quiet confidence. But if we leave the book closed, we miss out on that daily restoration.
3. God's Word Grounds Your Life
In Matthew 7, Jesus tells a story about two men building houses. One built on sand (temporary world philosophies), and the other built on a rock. When the storms hit, only the house built on the rock stood firm.
When your foundation is built on the timeless truths of Scripture, no seasonal storm or unexpected crisis can take you down. But to build on the rock, you have to actually read the blueprint.
A Simple Way to Start: The SOAP Method
If opening the Bible feels overwhelming, don't try to read hours at a time. Start with just a few verses a day and use this simple four-step guide to process what you read:
Scripture: Step 1.
Open your Bible or a Bible app. Read a short passage or even just a few verses. Write down the verse that stands out to you the most.
Observation: Step 2
What do you notice about this verse? What is the main point? What is God saying to the original audience?
Application: Step 3
How does this truth apply to your life right now? What needs to change in your heart, your relationships, or your schedule?
Prayer: Step 4
Close by talking to God about what you just read. Ask Him to help you live out this truth throughout your day.
Give It Time
Think of your faith like film photography. The film has to be consistently exposed to light for the image to develop clearly. God wants to develop your peace, compassion, and faith, but this requires consistent exposure to His Word.
Start small. Try the SOAP method this week, and watch how a few minutes a day begins to change your path.
