The Surgeon General of the United States recently released a report that said the biggest epidemic affecting Americans is loneliness. He shared that as he traveled the country, people would tell him, “I have to shoulder all of life’s burdens by myself,” or, “If I disappear tomorrow, no one will even notice.”  The data says that 1 in 2 people reported feeling lonely, and that was before the COVID-19 pandemic.  There’s no telling what the statistics are now, post-pandemic.

Generation Z, born between the mid-1990s and the early 2010s, is facing its own epidemic of loneliness. This tech-savvy, socially conscious, and diverse generation stands out for its distinct traits and faces a set of challenges that its predecessors did not.  A significant portion of their life was spent in isolation at home, separated from their friends and loved ones, learning electronically during the pandemic.  Now, they are learning to re-emerge into social settings and community, which can cause anxiety and fear.  As much as we dread loneliness, the potential risk that vulnerability in relationships poses can be even more daunting for many young people.

In light of this, never before has Christian community, particularly within the context of a church youth group, been more vital to young people’s lives.  A Christian youth group helps provide guidance and a safe space for teens to navigate their unique journey of life and explore and develop their faith in God.  City of Life Church offers a student ministry called Icon Youth to answer this need for Gen Z.  Icon meets weekly on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm at City of Life.  The services incorporate moments of worship, teachings from seasoned leaders about how Biblical truths apply to pressing cultural issues, times of corporate prayer and encouragement, and time to socialize and grow friendships.

Here’s how Icon Youth’s weekly gatherings can make a huge difference in Gen Z-er’s lives:

Digital Natives

Generation Z is the first to grow up entirely in the digital age, with the internet and social media playing an integral role in their lives. This has shaped their communication style, ability to multitask, and access to vast information. However, constant exposure to technology can also lead to challenges like shorter attention spans, online harassment, and a sense of disconnection from the physical world. At Icon Youth, we realize that technology plays a prime role in these students’ lives.  We prioritize having meaningful discussions on navigating the digital world with wisdom and discernment, developing a Biblical ethic around the use of technology, and using these platforms for God’s glory.

Equipped for Greatness

Never before has a generation been more aware of the injustices in the world.  However, navigating the complexities of social issues can be overwhelming for young people, leading to anxiety, burnout, and a sense of hopelessness. At Icon Youth, we create an environment that fosters open conversations and provides a safe space for exploring these topics through a Christian lens. We believe these students are destined for greatness, and we want to equip Generation Z with the tools to bring the presence of God into the world around them.

Mental Health

Unlike previous generations, Generation Z is increasingly vocal about mental health. They face unique stressors, such as academic pressures, social media comparisons, and an uncertain future. The prevalence of anxiety, depression, and loneliness demands the need for a supportive community that can address mental health challenges with the truth of the Bible.  Icon Youth provides a space where Generation Z can find solace in God’s Word, share their struggles honestly and without judgment, and receive guidance from strong spiritual mentors.  Our goal is that each student would experience God's love through the support of a caring community to realize that their life has a purpose and that joy and hope are available.

Identity Discovery

Generation Z is on a journey of self-discovery, exploring and questioning their identities more than any previous generation. These discussions are being held openly in schools, on social media, and in the media.  Navigating these personal journeys can be confusing if you don’t have a solid grasp on who God designed you to be. At Icon Youth, we believe that the One who created you is the only One who can define you. Icon is a place where spiritual leaders point teens toward their God-given identities in an atmosphere of love, grace, and truth.

Seekers Welcome

Despite their challenges, Generation Z is known to be spiritually curious and hungry for truth. They desire a faith that is real, relevant, and meaningful to their lives. At Icon Youth, we engage students with biblical teachings in relatable ways, foster deep relationships, and provide mentorship opportunities to help nurture their faith. Weekly, our services create an atmosphere where students can hear from God, receive guidance from the Bible, and connect to a broader community of believers.  Our primary purpose is that students would meet Jesus, surrender their lives to Him, and then reflect Him in everything they do (like icons).  This empowers Generation Z to navigate the complexities of the world while grounding themselves in the firm foundation of Christ.

Generation Z presents unique strengths and challenges that distinguish them from previous generations. In a time when students feel lonelier than ever, the importance of a strong Christian community in a church youth group setting cannot be understated. Icon Youth partners with parents to provide the support, guidance, and nurturing environment that Generation Z needs to thrive in a rapidly changing world. By embracing their uniqueness and walking alongside them in their faith journey, our leaders empower Generation Z to live the bold life of faith they are called to live while making a difference in the world around them.
