Baptism is one of the most meaningful steps you can take after deciding to follow Jesus. It's a public declaration that your old life is gone and your new life in Christ has begun. Baptism is the God-ordained way that we publicly identify with Him and celebrate the transformation He has done in our lives.

WHAT IS BAPTISM?

An outward expression of an inward transformation

Baptism at City of Life

When someone is lowered into the water, it symbolizes spiritually dying to their old life. When they are raised out of the water, it represents being raised to new life in Christ.

It's a powerful picture of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus — and of the new identity every believer receives through Him.

"Baptism represents people doing away with the old life and stepping into a new life with God."

— Pastor Jeffrey Smith

Romans 6 reminds us that through Christ, we are no longer defined by our past. We are dead to sin and alive in Him.

Why Should I Be Baptized?

01

Jesus asked us to

Jesus Himself was baptized and instructed His followers to believe and be baptized (Mark 16:16). Baptism is one of the first acts of obedience after placing your faith in Christ.

02

It's a public declaration

Faith begins in your heart, but baptism is how you publicly tell the world "I belong to Jesus." It's the way to boldly identify with Christ and celebrate the life He's given you.

03

It's a covenant

Throughout Scripture, God's people marked important covenant moments with visible acts of commitment. Baptism doesn't earn God's love, but it demonstrates the relationship you've already entered into through Jesus. It's both a symbol and a seal of the covenant believers have with Christ.

SCRIPTURE

What God's Word Says

Romans 6:3-4

Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Acts 2:38

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1 Peter 3:21

And this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also — not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Mark 16:16

Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Baptism FAQ

Do Christians need to get baptized?
Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is the biblical response of obedience for every believer. Jesus instructed His followers to believe and be baptized. Yes, believers should be baptized as it's an important step in the life of every Christian.
I was baptized as a baby. Should I be baptized again?
While many churches practice infant baptism, at City of Life, we practice believer's baptism. We believe baptism follows a personal decision to trust in Jesus. If you were baptized as an infant but have since personally chosen to follow Christ, we'd encourage you to take this step.
Can I be baptized if I just gave my life to Jesus?
Yes! In the New Testament, people were often baptized shortly after placing their faith in Jesus. If you've recently surrendered your life to Christ and you're ready to publicly declare your faith, there's no reason to wait.

Baptism Day FAQ

What should I wear?
Come as you are! We provide a baptism shirt and towels. You're welcome to bring dry clothes to change into. We recommend darker clothing.
Can my family come?
Yes! We encourage your family and friends to celebrate this special moment with you. Baptism is one of the greatest celebrations in the life of the church. Our team will be there to celebrate with you, too!
What should I expect?
A pastor will briefly ask if you've decided to follow Jesus. You'll then be gently lowered into the water and raised back up, symbolizing your new life in Christ. The entire experience takes only a few moments, but represents a lifelong commitment to Jesus.
