What Do You Believe?

By Pastor Jeffrey Smith

Words kill, words give life. They’re either poison or fruit, you choose. Proverbs 18:21 (MSG)

It sounds bad (and I promise it isn’t), but you will eat your words. In this passage from Proverbs, it plainly states that words are either life-bringing or life-ending. Ultimately we reap the blessing or curse from the words we choose. Words are seeds that will come to fruition one way or another. That brings us to an element of our words that we seldom consider; we say what we say because we believe what we believe. The problem is twofold. There are problems with our words and there are problems with our belief systems.

So much of the words that we speak are based on our understanding, our convictions, and our belief systems.  If our belief systems all tend to be negative, they contribute to the negative words we speak over our lives. The words we speak are often efforts of ours to confirm what we believe to be true. We subconsciously reach out for things, whether it be Facebook posts, music choices, or political figures, that support our deepest convictions. If we believe that God isn’t for us, then we will search for evidence that supports that belief. You find the perfect parking spot, someone steals it, and you have all the proof that you need that God is against you and for everyone else! But I believe in the power of speaking life over circumstances. I believe, with all of my heart, that God is for me and for you. I believe He loved us on our best day and our worst day. Not only are these my deep convictions, but they align with what the Bible has said over every one of us, whether or not you feel it. God is not done with you. If you change your belief system, you can change your words and change your world. The question, then, is: what do you really believe?
