Touch the Icon

By Pastor Jeffrey Smith

What is my destiny? This question has caused people to change careers, go on trips around the world, and also do really stupid stuff in search of an answer. If we’re not careful, we can place too much importance on the circumstances in our lives while we search for destiny. Destiny has to be more than a job. It has to be more than a degree. If destiny is something that can only exist in a specific moment of your life, what’s the point of every other moment? Destiny is more than the achievements of life. Your destiny is to be like Christ.

That sounds really encouraging at first, but it’s a statement loaded with responsibility. If your destiny is to be like Christ, there is nothing stopping you from fulfilling that destiny right now. You don’t need one more thing to start being Christlike today. Living like Jesus requires us to know His will and live in His ways. We become representations of Him in everything we do and as people encounter us, they encounter Him.

The heart of my book, Jesus First, Jesus Always is this idea about being the icon of Jesus. Our phones have icons on them that represent an application. When we touch the icon, we’re taken into the application the way the developer intended it. In the same way, we’re called to be icons of Jesus in the world. When people encounter, they should instantly be able to see the love, joy, grace, and strength of Jesus the way God intended it. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have your dream job, dream car, dream education, or dream family yet. You can fulfill your destiny today by being like Christ in whatever situation you find yourself.
