Growing Fruit

By Pastor Jeffrey Smith

The fruit from the Holy Spirit begins as a seed planted in our hearts by the Spirit of God when we first yield our lives to Jesus. This fruit is grown and cultivated; it doesn’t just happen overnight. What are some ways this growth happens in the spiritual life of a Christian?

First, it is gradual. No one sees a person growing on the spot, rather it is a process over time involving watering and cultivating the seed.

Second, true growth is inevitable. Once the Holy Spirit dwells in the fertile soil of our heart, growth will happen and nothing can stop it.

Thirdly, it is internal. We do not base growth on the external things in our lives, but rather what happens first in our heart and in our soul. It warns us when we need it and encourages us to grow to the next level.

Finally, true spiritual growth in a Christian is symmetrical. The fruit of the Spirit is a singular fruit with nine different expressions. Our lives must have a balance of all nine.

What are the nine expressions of the fruit of the Holy Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23?

Love - the agape love of God which loves others despite their faults and failures
Joy - a gladness that comes from knowing Jesus
Peace - the heavenly tranquil ability to go through a storm and know everything will be ok
Patience -  waiting on others and not forcing our way in
Gentleness - kindness with strength
Goodness - uprightness, doing what is right, being trustworthy
Faith - a strong belief and holy conviction
Meekness - humility or great strength under control
Self-control - discipline to master your desires

People will know we are Spirit-filled because they will see this fruit growing in our lives.
