First In Existence

By Pastor Jeffrey Smith

In the first few chapters of the Jesus First, Jesus Always, I highlight the idea that Jesus is first in existence. Jesus is referred to as the Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. This means He is first in all existence. He precedes us, all our successes, and all our failures. Jesus was before you ever were. If we cannot rightly embrace this notion of preeminence, we miss out on one of the most fundamental aspects of Jesus’ identity. He was there before your problem ever existed. He was there before your opposition ever began. He was there before the sickness, before the pain, before the difficulty. Jesus is first in existence and that changes everything.

If anything in your life feels overwhelming, it pales in comparison to the power of Jesus. You can take heart today in knowing that He was there before this present trial began and He is not going anywhere as a result of it. Getting a true revelation of Jesus is not something that happens by mere logic or reason. Knowing Jesus as Lord of All is a result of revelation from the Spirit of God. Whether you’ve never been to church or you’ve attended one your entire life, it’s my prayer that each of us experience the kind of revelation that Peter had to be able to proclaim Jesus as the Messiah.

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”  They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven."  Matthew 16:13-17 NIV
