Called and Purposed.

By Pastor Jeffrey Smith

.. who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began..” 2 Timothy 1:9

The Word of God reminds us that we are both called and purposed through Christ Jesus. Our calling represents what is in our hands which includes our vocation or platform God has given us in this season.  Our callings come with responsibilities and pressures. What is in your hand may not make sense or seem to have any value. Most people are doing what they need to do to pay bills and long for the day where they accomplish something of significance. Do not despise these tough moments as God often uses what is in your hand to shape and mold you to become a person of purpose.

Your purpose is much bigger than your calling, and it usually involves a God-given dream in your heart.  Our purpose is the destiny God has for our future. What is in our hearts compels us and seems nobler than our current situation. We magnify the dream, yet undervalue our calling.  We often believe those things conflict one another, but they are actually divinely intertwined.

God uses mundane things to accomplish  His purpose. We see this point exemplified in the life of Moses. God asked Moses to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt, a dream he carried in his heart for most of his life. Moses wondered how he would execute such a divine assignment. God replied with an important question, “Then the LORD said to him, "What is that in your hand?" (Exodus 4:2) All Moses had was an ordinary shepherd’s staff he carried for 40 years. The Lord asked him to lay down his staff and it transformed before his eyes into a snake.  The Lord then asked him to pick it up by the tail and it transformed back to a staff.  What seemed ordinary in Moses' hand became the avenue God used to accomplish His purpose.   Similarly, when we lay down what is in our hand, God will transform it into an effective tool that will lead us to our destiny. Never make the mistake of despising what is in your hand because you think it is not as important as what’s in your heart. God sees differently and will use your calling to lead you to your purpose.
