Power in Our Words

There is power in our words when they are associated with our faith.

In Mark 11:24, Jesus explains, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

Jesus is teaching us the principle of speaking faith-filled words over our lives. It is not about speaking positively for positive sake, rather it is speaking something real that has sprung up from our faith. If I say something in faith, it is going to happen because of the powerful faith behind the words that I am saying.

Silence is not the answer; that is not faith. Instead, we can be proactive by speaking words of destiny over our health, our family, our life, and our job. Not saying anything means we don’t believe anything about our future.

The words we choose control our lives. James 3 discusses the tongue’s power in a person’s life by referring to it like the bit in the mouth of a horse. Though the bit is small, it controls the direction of the whole animal. A small rudder on a boat has the power to control the course of that mighty vessel.

In the same way, the words we choose to speak over our life control our destiny; they control our future. When we speak over our own life, we speak direction into our future.

Be careful though; words can be destructive. James 3:10 explains that words out of the same mouth can be both a blessing and a curse. We really cannot take back our words. We can and should apologize, but we cannot take those words back. Paul warns us in Ephesians 4 against speaking unwholesome words which can actually grieve the Holy Spirit. That is the last thing we want to do!

Instead, words can be carefully chosen and used to be a delight to others. Proverbs 25:11 reveals that words spoken at just the right time are appealing to others like “apples of gold surrounded by silver.” Color your life with power-filled words that speak faith, life, and direction into your future and those around you.
