So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you." Deuteronomy 31:6
One of the saddest things that I often hear people express is that they believe God couldn’t love them because of what they’ve done. We’ve all felt it at one point or another. We convince ourselves that God must not love us because of our failures. The moment we think God has turned His back on us, however, is the moment that we’ve forgotten the power of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.
Jesus hung on the cross and took on all of our sin, guilt and shame. Many theologians say that at that moment, Jesus became the vilest creature in the entire universe. He was sin personified and not just any sin. He personified my sin. He personified your sin. In that dark moment, the Father turned his back on the Son. The full penalty of sin and wrath was upon Jesus. When He rose again, he defeated sin and having atoned for our sins, made a way for us to be in right standing with God.
In other words, because of Jesus, God is now always turning towards you and never turning away from you. It’s a simple but powerful thought. He loves you and has been with you every step of the way. There’s never been one moment of your life that he’s walked out on you. His love is not tossed about by your successes or failures. Instead, it’s constant because of Jesus.
As we look back upon our lives, we must stop trying to end chapters of our lives with question mark when God has ended it with a period. There’s no future in our past. Instead of asking why certain things went the way they should, we should remind ourselves that because of Jesus, the future is bright. Instead of dwelling on where we went wrong, let’s dwell on what He has made right in us.
God is always turning toward you. He’ll never leave you. He’ll never forsake you. Our only reasonable response to that great display of love is to receive it and share it with others.
